Anthropic Backers See Billions in Gains Ahead of Historic IPO

Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant are poised to realize massive windfalls as the company approaches a potential $2 trillion public listing.

Anthropic is on the verge of a transformative public listing expected to occur later this year, with projections suggesting a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion. This anticipated move stands to generate substantial financial returns for the venture capital firms and individual investors who backed the company during its earlier growth phases. Even when assessed against the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by many of these key backers already represent billions of dollars in equity value.

The financial trajectory of these investments highlights the rapid appreciation in value that characterizes the current artificial intelligence sector. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, several prominent investors have seen their positions grow exponentially since their initial entry points. This growth underscores the high stakes involved in funding leading AI labs, where early commitments can translate into multi-billion dollar holdings before a company even reaches the public markets.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google, exemplifies the potential of early-stage involvement. Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at approximately $461 million according to PitchBook records. His decision to invest at that relatively low valuation has resulted in a current ownership stake of about 1 percent of the company. At the prevailing private market price, this position is now estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion.

Late-stage institutional investors have also captured significant value, though their entry points were substantially higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This large-scale bet has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts note that this figure could potentially double if the company achieves its higher-end IPO valuation targets, further cementing the firm’s position as a major beneficiary of the AI boom.

Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D funding round, has maintained a persistent investment strategy in the company. Over time, the venture capital firm has injected more than $1 billion into Anthropic. This sustained capital injection has secured a stake that is currently valued at $14 billion. The firm’s leadership in the Series D round indicates a deep confidence in the company’s long-term trajectory, a confidence that has been rewarded by the dramatic increase in equity value.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, entered the investment landscape for Anthropic more recently, making its first bet earlier this year. By the time of this investment, the company’s valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion contribution secured approximately 1 percent ownership of the firm. Despite the high entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value, reflecting the continued upward pressure on the company’s market capitalization in the months leading up to its expected listing.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its position grow into the billions. The firm initially invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, significantly increasing its exposure to the AI lab. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars at current valuations. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital entity, but the firm’s existing holdings in Anthropic remain a major asset.

Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, achieved one of the most dramatic percentage gains among the listed investors. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. This outsized return highlights the critical impact of board-level access and early alignment with the company’s strategic direction.

As the AI industry matures, the financial outcomes for these backers will serve as a benchmark for future investment rounds in the sector. The disparity in returns between early and late-stage investors illustrates the premium placed on early commitment in high-growth technology sectors. For New England readers and broader financial markets, the upcoming IPO of Anthropic represents more than just a corporate event; it is a significant test of the valuation models that have driven the recent AI investment cycle.

The convergence of these factors suggests that the public offering will be one of the largest in recent history. The wealth created for these specific backers is a tangible measure of the economic shift toward artificial intelligence. As the company prepares for its debut on the public exchanges, the focus will remain on whether the $2 trillion valuation can be sustained, but the current private market gains confirm that the foundational value has already been established.
