Tesla is preparing to ship the first Cybercab units to customers before the end of 2026. The company announced this timeline during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 21. This date closes a period of uncertainty regarding when the autonomous taxi would become available for purchase.
Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy delivered the update on the call. He stated that production for the vehicle is underway at Gigafactory Texas. However, he also noted that all vehicles built on the line so far are going into Tesla’s own internal Robotaxi fleet. This setup is necessary to support the public service that launched in early September.
Moravy said the company is aiming for Cybercab deliveries to customers by the end of this year. He added that the rollout will begin in small numbers. Tesla wants to use this time to gain experience with logistics, ownership models, and fleet management. The company also plans to learn how to operate autonomous vehicles that are not under its direct control.
The timeline for this delivery has been in development for several months. The Cybercab has been in production since February 2026. Tesla placed early units into its public Robotaxi service in early September. Now, the company plans to sell the vehicle to outside buyers as well.
CEO Elon Musk addressed the role of the Cybercab during the same call. He described the vehicle as a transport-as-a-service offering. He stated that the vast majority of Cybercabs will be Tesla-owned. He contrasted this with personal vehicles like the Model 3, Model Y, or Roadster.
The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle. It does not have a steering wheel or pedals. The vehicle operates using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite. Tesla previously indicated it aims to sell the Cybercab for about $30,000.
The release of the vehicle faces some regulatory hurdles. The autonomous operation of early units may be limited by geography. This is due to lagging regulations in some areas. Furthermore, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, said that unsupervised Full Self-Driving is expected to ship to consumer cars during Q2 2027.
The company will continue to build vehicles for its own fleet as deliveries begin. The immediate goal remains to release the first units to customers by year-end.
